Work included:
• Study of local conditions and specific problems
• Preparation of a work program
• Training through theoretical and practical courses of a cadre of 30 extensionists – comprising veterinarians, zoo technicians and agronomists - to provide guidance on improved management practices
• Establishment of the necessary administrative facilities, including purchase of equipment and vehicles
• Division of the country into areas on the basis of farm distribution, and assignment of an extensionist to a total of 24 farms in each area
• Implementation of extension activities through regular visits to farms, recording and follow-up of farm operations, and contact with input suppliers and dairies to ensure steady supply of inputs and sale of milk
The scope of the extension network was expanded concurrently with the training of new extension teams, and in a period of 18 months, a total of about 450 farms were included in the framework of the extension operations. Within a period of about 15 months from commencement of the project, milk production throughout the country increased by an average of about 30 percent, mainly through improved management and with little need for additional investments. |
