The study area is located in the middle Río Rancheria basin, in the municipalities of Barrancas, Fonseca and San Juan del Cesar in Guajira Department.
Work included:
§ Performance of basic hydrological studies,
§ Investigation of water and soil resources,
§ Agricultural planning,
§ Planning of engineering works,
§ Study of organizational aspects,
§ Economic evaluation of the project as a whole.
The Barrancas and Fonseca Development Nuclei, having a potential net irrigated area of 200 ha, were defined, taking into consideration optimal use of water resources, crop diversification, and relative advantages of the area in terms of climate and location, with a view to facilitating export of produce from the region, in particular fruits.
The engineering works at Barrancas included a low diversion dam on La Quebrada Creek; a pumping station equipped with three pumps, each of 110 m3/hr capacity, a buried distribution network, pressure irrigation systems, and water metering facilities.
The components at Fonseca werre similar, the flow there being 115 m3/hr. |
